2025 City-Wide Accountability Session Prioritizes People over Projects

Last Sunday, COPS/Metro packed St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church for its Accountability Session with 350 leaders and candidates for mayor and city council. The crowd represented over 28 institutions across San Antonio, including schools, interfaith congregations, non-profits, and community/neighborhood associations.

COPS/Metro launched its Sign-Up, Take Charge campaign, pledging to sign up 50,000 registered voters in opposition of using tax dollars to finance Project Marvel, a multi-billion-dollar sports and entertainment district which has been planned almost entirely behind closed doors. Leaders committed to signing on 50,000 people in support of investing in people and local neighborhood infrastructure, and to delivering this constituency to the polls.

"We have an agenda and our agenda is investment in our people, long-term investment that's gonna transform the lives of our people from generation to generation," said Father Jimmy Drennan of St. Margaret Mary’s.

Leaders grilled mayoral and city council candidates, who gave yes/no responses to their commitments on workforce development, infrastructure, local control, and the public funding of Project Marvel.

“Project Marvel is a $4-billion-dollar blank check that the taxpayers of San Antonio will be paying for the next 30 years,” said Anthony Gonzalez of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.

"I like downtown, I love basketball, but I love my family more. I want (my son) Mateo to have access to libraries, parks, and a great education. I want his neighborhoods to be safe and I want his neighbors to have access to healthcare, and housing.”

Candidates made specific commitments to further the COPS/Metro agenda of issues and agreed to meet with COPS/Metro within 30 days of taking office and every quarter.
