A University of Public Life

I've worked with [people] who have a lot of trouble even reading, but when they're given the opportunity to learn how to organize, I see this transformation within them. I see them become powerful...

And to me, that's amazing."

- Fr. Steven Gamez

COPS/Metro is a University of Public Life where people from all walks of life become leaders, developing the courage and skills to accomplish more than they ever thought possible.

Leadership development in COPS/Metro happens in two contexts:

1) On the ground through organizing in and across institutions

2) Through formal trainings

First, leaders receive mentorship from veteran leaders and organizers drawing on a 50-year tradition of organizing. As they act on the issues that matter to their families and institutions, they reflect together on their learning.

Secondly, formal trainings at the local and national level are offered in Spanish and English, sponsored by the West Southwest IAF network and led by experienced professional IAF organizers.

Trainings offer a chance to dive deeper into the concepts and skills of organizing. Leaders learn how to:

  • Understand power
  • Discover and act on the interests of their institutions
  • Identify and develop sustainable leadership
  • Think and act strategically
  • Engage with the mission of their institutions in new ways
  • Discuss, argue, negotiate and compromise across the lines that divide.
  • Form and maintain collaborative relationships that ultimately lead to action.

Taken together, on-the-ground learning and formal training give our leaders a chance to reflect on their own development, and create public friendships with others across their city and region.
