SAISD voted unanimously to close Carvajal Elementary, a 76-year old West Side school serving families in one of San Antonio’s poorest zip codes. While the closure disrupts hundreds of families, COPS/Metro leveraged SAISD’s commitment of $28.6 million in bond funds to build a new, modern K–8 school on the West Side.
COPS/Metro Leader Melody Herrera’s nephew is one of 400 students who will transfer to another school after this school year. “He’s been going to that school since pre-k and it’s convenient,” Herrera said. “He has his afterschool program there also at Good Samaritan.”
Standing with Herrera and a dozen COPS/Metro leaders at the final district vote, Rev. Mike DeGerolami of St. Timothy’s Catholic Church emphasized that COPS/Metro will continue to work with the district to ensure that the interests of West Side families are represented in the face of a ‘a new reality coming’ to SAISD and public education.
“We will be here to watch, and to hold you accountable,” he said.
